What's Blooming in the Cemetery
Early Roses in Bloom Garden Tour
Tour Guide:
Jennifer Holden
On March 27, Rose Garden volunteer Jennifer Holden will
lead a tour of "Early Blooming Roses" in the
award-winning Historic Rose Garden. Her tour will
include the banksiae roses, which climb high up trees
and over structures and produce many thousands of blooms
in a spring spectacular. The single white E.
banksiae normalis was featured in the Sacramento Bee
last year. The tour will also look at early-blooming
Tea and China roses, repeat-blooming varieties that were
popular in Gold Rush days and which are still good
choices for modern California gardens. It's an
exciting time in the rose garden, with new leaves, many
buds, and the first glory of the spring bloom. Come
explore the garden with Jennifer, and see what's
blooming.
The tour commences at 10 am from the Cemetery’s main
gate at Broadway and 10th Street. Visitors may park
across the street from the 10th Street Gate and meet at
the cemetery entrance. Held under the auspices of the
City of Sacramento Division of History & Science, this
tour is presented as a public service by the Old City
Cemetery Committee, Inc.
For tour information, please
call (916) 448-0811. Tours are free, though donations
for the restoration of the cemetery are greatly needed
and appreciated. |
